DR Weekend Edition 12-29-07: Second DR Live Webcast & Comments Contest Update

by Adrien-Luc Sanders

I knew I’d forgotten to do something today. That’s what I get for sleeping until almost sunset.

Second DR Live Webcast

After the first webcast, I had my doubts about doing it again - possibly because I came quite close to fainting the first time through. However, general consensus seems to be that I should do a second…and frankly, if I can’t think of something to talk about for 30 minutes for just once a month, I should really be ashamed of myself.photo courtesy of stylesr1 on sxc.hu

So the tentative date and time for the next webcast is Sunday, January 20th, 2008 - from 5p-5:30p CST. If you missed it last time due to the time and want to tune in this time, let me know if there’s a conflict and if enough people have a problem, I’ll see what I can do. Also, if you tried to tune in and had any problems with the streaming plugin or the java chat room, please let me know what browser and OS you were using and I’ll see if I can tweak it any more.

Hopefully this time I can slow down and mellow out a little, rather than rattling on in sheer terror and sounding like Alvin the Chipmunk on speed.

1,500 Comments Contest Update

I’m not sure how you guys pulled it off, but we’re already at 1,415 comments. Just 85 left to go before someone’s taking home a pink monstrosity of an MP3 player. The next goal after that will be 2,500, and we’ll see what I can scrape up for a prize.Image snitched from Buy.com

We may try something different for a little fun, though. After we hit the 1,500 mark, I think I’ll put up a post just for the sake of commenting and see how many comments we can get in 24 hours. The goal will be 100 comments to that one post in 24 hours, starting precisely at 12a CST on the appointed date. The person who posts the 100th comment to that post will get some prize or another. Probably another MP3 player, but…I have no idea. We’ll see when it happens. It’s just an idea. If we do it, I’ll clarify the rules in the post. Hopefully by then the Akismet filter problem will be fixed, so I don’t have to manually approve each comment.

And I’m just rambling, so I’m off now; I have a bit more novel-tweaking to do before sending it off to a publisher in the hopes that someone will bite, so I’d better get to work. Wish me luck.

Have a good weekend, and I’ll see you Monday with a quick comic.

~Adri

  1. Lala Says:

WOOOHOOO!!! Second Live Webcast! CONGRATULATIONS! I’ll be sure to mark it on my calendar and find out the timezone thing (yay Canada!) also congrats on the flood of comments!

I did not think that you were like Alvin at all. It was impromptu and awesome!! *whispers* Alvin is SCARY!…not as scary as his female counterpart…can’t remember her name…that is sheer terror..

    YAY *waves pom poms maniacally*

Peace, love and chocolate chip cookie dough!

  2. Sihaya Says:

I’m working on something that might give you something to talk about, so I’ll be sure to get it to you in time. Nice to hear that a second date has been set! =)

  3. Lessa Says:

Is it bad that I want to post one word per comment to help you get to that 2500, for purely selfish reasons? Is it really my fault I have a teenage daughter so TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY in love with the color pink that gifting her with that MP3 player would make me the COOLEST MOM EVER? I shall try to refrain however, and not post repetitively for the sole purpose of (MINE MINE MINE ITS ALL MINE!) procuring said glaringly pink device… just because I’m attempting to keep a mental count of where ya’ll are and all….

    Ahem.

What was I saying? Oh yes! SECOND PODCAST! YAY! (shining grin)

  4. Sihaya Says:

Well, in the unlikely event that I get comment 1500, Adri can send it to you =D I already have an MP3 player, and you get one extra chance of being supermom!

  5. Kaine Says:

Sweet, second webcast. I’ll remember that date. Really. I will.

Oooh, and good luck with the novel. I wish I had the persistence to actually finish anything I write. Unfortunately, I’m far too easily distracted by all kinds of shiny new ideas, and as a result, I have folders upon folders of random snippets from different storylines. *sighs*

(Oh, and by the by, if you actually want to respond to my last email (or already have), it may not get through at that address; I’ve been having issues there recently. You might be better off sending it to my new gmail account (which is the same as my other email address, only @gmail.com instead of @yahoo.com). That should be more reliable. Thanks. ^-^)

    Vale!
    - K’

  6. Adrien-Luc Sanders Says:

Lala: I think her name was Brittney/Brittany or something. I’m ashamed that I remember that.

Sihaya: Now you’ve got me curious. No teasing like that.

Lessa: You never know, you keep delurking and you might hit the 1500 mark. (Though is it fair for another 451 Press writer to win?)

Kaine: I haven’t had time to answer; I keep getting distracted this weekend, but when I do reply I’ll make sure to use the Gmail account.

On the novel…I’ve already been rejected by some twenty agents who say it’s good, I write well, it’s interesting, but they don’t know if they can sell it. That’s why I’m going straight to the publisher, to see what they say. It’s the only project I’ve ever finished; I, too, have folders full of story snippets - and I recently started a new one that had a lot of promise and was far more marketable than the first, and abruptly got writer’s block when an agent asked for a partial (still haven’t heard back from him, but they’re slow). I think Sihaya wanted to kill me when I stopped on that one, since she and a few others were following the chapters.

  7. Lessa Says:

Aw, Sihaya, you’re officially my favorite. After Adri, of course. (grin)

As for fair - Life, she is unfair! But I would accept that judging, if need be. I’m easy - just never, ever cheap! (though somehow, I’m only 20% diva… riddle me this…)

On the Novel, by the way, congrats for having the balls to keep sending it out. Me, I have a completed novel, half of a sequel, half a dozen short stories, random snippets, and emails to my BFF (not Jill! Ha!) of dream snippets and ideas that I begged him to ‘Remember! There’s a story there!’ and when I woke up I had completely forgotten and they all look like jibberish.

Le Sigh. When your rich and famous, put in a good word for me, huh?

  8. A. Shelton Says:

And, you know, I frigging MISSED it again. *grumble*

  9. Lynn Says:

*does a dance for live broadcast* I missed hte first one! Drama in my life had me crying straight through it D: But I DID download the broadcast so I was happy with that.

By the way, I thoroughly enjoyed our…30 second conversation Adri. Really, I did. :3

I WILL comment steadily until i WIN!!! XO

    Must win
    Must win
    Must win
Must win! I are determined! ^^

  10. Kaine Says:

Thanks. I just don’t trust yahoo anymore. *eyes it suspiciously*

Oi. Some of my friends are still upset at me for never finishing one of my old stories. And, unfortunately, for the past two years, some stupid stressful thing has come up right around NaNoWriMo time, so I’m never really able to concentrate on that. You’ve reminded me how much I enjoy writing, though; I really feel like actually working on some of my older stuff. I think maybe I’ll put off the homework for another night and do that. :3

  11. -Ash- Says:

Yay! Another live broadcast ^^. It’s best to go straight to the Publishers Adri, they have better connections with the bookstores [like Barnes & Nobles], and know what can sell. You may even want to go directly to a bookstore, describe your book a bit, & ask if it is something they would sell.

  12. Lynn Says:

I have lots of files like that, just snippets, beginnings, middles, character profiles, etc. Even my teachers ask what happened to the stories I’ve started. I’m more a poet though, those are things I finish. I’ve got books of poems, really! I think I’m pretty good, but some are a it angsty…I use most of them as basis for a story usually and they come out great.

I’m STILL trying to write >.

  13. Del Says:

Only got around to hearing the first cast today (the joys of only just having acquired a new laptop to replace the stolen one). Liked it very much, and there’s nothing at all wrong with your voice. You are not squeaky or strange, though having been raised around Northern Irish accents makes damn near anything sound melodic and normal to me. Interesting ways you have of warping a point from one topic to something almost entirely different.
Hopefully for the next one I’ll be in a position to actually tune in at the time. Looking forward to it!

  14. A. Shelton Says:

-Ash-: That’s generally good advice and it’s the traditional way to get something published–going to the publishers. Going agent-first isn’t unheard-of, however, and it’s just as viable. They have to have much more knowledge about what sells, and to which publishers. Not only that, work represented and offered by an agent is more likely to get your work bought by a publisher. Otherwise, your ms spends weeks, maybe months, in the slush-pile until the first reader gets to it–and that first reader is a peon. Most agents read the work themselves, if they feel interested enough to ask for it.

Besides, one of the best ideas out there is to take the contract the publisher sends you to an agent–who can then work to see that you don’t get reamed by the publisher, so an agent should be involved at some point eventually. I think it’s better to go agent, and let the agent do all the work of selling it to a publisher.

That’s what I intend to do, anyway. I couldn’t handle the publishers’ turnaround and all the impersonal rejection letters. I’d rather hear the news from someone who’s on *my* side–and the publishers aren’t.

  15. Kujo Hikaru Says:

I’ll be there, again (Grandma should be in the plane and on the way out of town by the time you start). I really hope I don’t win again, that’s why I’m being a little quiet. Not that you would let me win again, but…

And good luck with the publisher. Not that I think you’ll need it, you have skill on your side. xD
